Mecca Sports Basketball House Basketball
Over the past ten years, Coach Angelo has been dedicated to teaching youth sports in the city of Richmond through programs such as the Richmond Youth Basketball League (RYBL), Basketball World Toronto (BWT), LayUp (Toronto), and of course, here with Mecca Sports. Basketball skill development has been the main focus for Mecca Sports for the last six years.
I noticed the lack of detailed skill development among youth in Richmond about ten years ago. I felt my talents and experience were needed in this area, and so The Mecca was born.
The Mecca became a place for everyone who are dedicated to improving their skills. It's for athletes who played at a high level and for kids who weren’t deemed talented or skilled enough to make their school or private club teams - a place where they could improve, grow, and appreciate the sport regardless of team selection. Mecca is for anyone willing to put in the work to become better, build strong habits, and develop skills that translate both on the court and in life. It is a place to feel at home, without being treated differently based on skill level.
Over time, the demand for more game-time opportunities has grown, and private clubs are everywhere. Yet many kids are still left behind - unable to make teams, or on teams but not improving in skill or understanding. At Mecca, we do not expect every participant to become the top athlete in the city, but we do expect our students to leave with a stronger understanding of the sport and valuable life lessons. We aim to help them build good habits and routines, learn to respect themselves and others, and most importantly, enjoy the moment.
With that being said, we are excited to introduce our new format for the upcoming season: Mecca Sports House Teams.
The goal remains skill development, now with the addition of structured team play. If you’ve ever met Coach Angelo, you know that anything he does is driven by quality and a pursuit of excellence. Stay tuned for more detailed information in the coming days and weeks. It’s time to bring in real coaches, trainers, and former high-level athletes - people with true experience and skin in the game - to take back the reins.
